Previously, insulting inscriptions repeatedly appeared on the monuments.
The city council of Poltava approved the decision to dismantle the monuments to Soviet generals Zygin and Vatutin, as well as to the poet Alexander Pushkin. The Minister of Culture of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko announced this on his Telegram channel. He also requested that the authorities at the same time demolish the city monuments dedicated to Peter I.
Interestingly, the decision to demolish was made on the same day as the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court sentenced the mayor of Poltava, Alexander Mamai. Previously, he repeatedly spoke out against the demolition of monuments.
The official was found guilty of paying two housekeepers from the city budget. Mamai is also accused of disclosing information about the location of the new military unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Poltava. Under this article, he faces up to 12 years in prison.
Meanwhile, some monuments in the city were replaced with new ones. In one of the Ukrainian hotels on Friday presented a monument to the Ukrainian philosopher Grigory Skovoroda. He appeared on the site of a sculpture in honor of the sun of Russian poetry by Alexander Pushkin.
