Polling stations opened in Azerbaijan for presidential elections

On Wednesday, polling stations were opened for the early presidential elections in Azerbaijan. At 08:00 local time (07:00 Moscow time), the doors of 6,537 polling stations opened throughout the country and in diplomatic missions of the republic around the world. Approximately 6 million voters are eligible to cast their ballot.

With Azerbaijan returning control of Karabakh, the 2024 presidential elections will be held for the first time throughout the country, including previously uncontrolled areas in Baku, where about 23 thousand people will vote at polling stations. For citizens abroad, 49 polling stations have been created in 37 countries.

The Central Election Commission registered seven candidates: Ilham Aliyev, the current head of state from the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, self-nominated Zahid Oruj and Fuad Aliyev, Razi Nurullayev from the National Front Party, Fazil Mustafa from the Great Creation Party, Elshad Musayev from the Great Azerbaijan” and Gudrat Hasanguliyev from the Popular Front of Integral Azerbaijan party. The President of Azerbaijan is elected for a term of 7 years.

The first data from the elections is planned to be announced by Baku two hours after the polling stations close, and preliminary voting results are expected the next day.
