In Volgograd today, March 27, begins a public opinion poll regarding the renaming of the city to Stalingrad. This was told to Kommersant by the chairman of the Volgograd City Council of Veterans Alexander Strukov.
Mr. Strukov noted that based on the results of the poll, a decision will be made whether to hold a referendum on renaming or not. “From today we are starting to meet with organizations and labor collectives. Then there will be a decision on a referendum,” Alexander Strukov explained.
A public council to study the opinion of residents on the renaming of the regional center to Stalingrad was established in December last year. Governor Andrei Bocharov called the former name of the city “a symbol of courage and heroism” of the people, but stressed that the decision to rename should be made “only on the basis of the position of the inhabitants.”
How Volgograd again thought about Stalingrad – in publications “Kommersant”.
