The authorities of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are trying to convince other EU countries and the European Commission to adopt the ninth package of anti-Russian sanctions, transmits newspaper Politico, citing sources in diplomatic circles. New restrictions should affect a large number of individuals.
The Baltic countries and Poland have proposed to introduce a new package of sanctions at the same time as the price ceiling for Russian oil. However, European diplomats did not support this idea, saying that the set of restrictions is not yet ready and the situation will only get worse if you try to link it to the price ceiling.
The new package of sanctions going forward will focus on many separate lists targeting Russian officials and “propagandists,” the two officials said. Officials also note that EU countries have proposed “long lists of names” and EC experts are now working through them to pinpoint who is definitely involved in the fighting in Ukraine.
The interlocutors of the publication note that this is necessary in order to support the decision to impose sanctions legally, protecting it from being challenged in court.
Head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell informedthat the EU is not yet ready to discuss new sanctions against Russia. In early October, the EU approved the eighth package of sanctions, one of the main measures of which was to limit the cost of oil. The price ceiling for crude oil will come into effect on December 5, 2022, and for refined products on February 5, 2023.
Bloomberg also wrotethat the G7 countries are planning to announce on November 23 at what level the price ceiling for Russian oil will be set. Representatives of the countries discussed setting the price ceiling for Russian oil between $40 and $60 per barrel, but the offer could be higher.
