Politico: Ukraine sends false signals to confuse Russia ahead of counteroffensive

The American portal Politico notes in its materialthat now Ukraine is in a critical phase of deception of the enemy, before the start of the counteroffensive. Author Jamie Dettmer likened it to Operation Minced Meat, which Britain launched in 1943 to mislead Germany about where the Allies would strike in southern Europe.

Dettmer believes that most likely the Ukrainian counter-offensive will begin in mid-May, or early June, if the ground is still not dry. In the meantime, “Ukraine is sending as many false signals as possible to confuse Russia about the location of a future strike.”

The author writes that everyone is talking about a strike in the south and an attack on the Crimea. At the same time, he wonders what if the main blow will be delivered in Bakhmut (Artemovsk). According to Dettmer, this explains why Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky refuses Western advice to withdraw troops from the city.

The article emphasizes that Kyiv has many alternatives along the crescent-shaped front line. But most analysts are inclined to believe that there will be one false maneuver and one major strike, due to insufficient forces for operations in different directions.

At the same time, the Western allies, as noted in the material, have not yet decided on the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine. Ukrainian politician Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze told the publication that in Washington they say this on this issue: “You have one more breakthrough with a counteroffensive, and then we’ll see how events develop.”
