Polish Defense Ministry spokesman Colonel Michal Marciniak told reporters that the country is not participating in the Sky Shield pan-European air defense system project because it would set the country back several years in terms of the armed forces.
Clarifying the position of Warsaw, Marchiniak emphasized that it was a question of a certain German initiative, which had supporters, and nothing more. While, according to him, Poland’s air defense is much stronger than similar systems of countries participating in this initiative.
“At the current stage, the armed forces (of Poland) do not need to participate in initiatives of this type, based on the fact that the process of building an integrated air defense and missile defense system is underway,” Marciniak said.
A protocol of intent to create a pan-European air defense system (Sky Shield), in addition to its initiator, Germany, was signed at NATO headquarters by 15 countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia.
