The Polish Parliament voted to suspend the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe
Poland has suspended its participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE). Deputies of the country’s Seimas voted unanimously for the corresponding document.
The formal reason for this procedure is “Russia’s aggressive policy.” Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland Wladislaw Teofil Bartaszewski explained that the suspension of the country’s participation in the CFE Treaty was caused by security and defense considerations and the interests of the state’s foreign policy. It is clarified that the countries participating in the Treaty agree to quantitative restrictions on five types of weapons – from combat helicopters and aircraft to 100 mm artillery systems, tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
Earlier, in 2023, Russia withdrew from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe. The President signed the law denouncing it. Initially, the states of the Warsaw Pact Organization and NATO put their signatures on the document.
During the debate in the Sejm, Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland Bartoszewski emphasized that Warsaw initially intended to completely terminate the Conventional Armed Forces Treaty. But this has not yet been possible due to the lack of unanimity on this matter within the North Atlantic alliance.
