Police clash with opponents of pension reform intensified in Paris

In Paris, on the Place de la Concorde, clashes are taking place between the police and opponents of pension reform, a RIA Novosti correspondent reports. On Thursday evening, the police tried to clear the area of the demonstrators, but they resisted, began to set fire to garbage cans, which led to the area being enveloped in smoke. Gendarmes, firefighters and police reinforcements arrived at the scene.
Earlier it was reported that the action was peaceful, but by evening the protesters began to build barricades of fences and boards, and then burn them down. In addition, they began to throw stones and bottles towards the police, to which the law enforcement officers responded with tear gas and water cannons.
The reform caused a wave of protests in French society. French authorities passed a controversial pension reform bill without a vote in parliament, using article 49.3 of the country’s constitution.
Now the increase in the retirement age from 62 to 64 years will be fixed at the legislative level and will come into force in six months. As a result of two months of protests, eight nationwide strikes have already taken place, against the backdrop of which the unions held hundreds of demonstrations. Most of them gathered more than a million participants across the country and were accompanied by pogroms and clashes with law enforcement officers.
