Poland will extend the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain after the embargo is lifted by the European Commission (EC). This was stated by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
“We will extend the ban, despite the lack of consent from the European Commission. We will not listen to Berlin or Brussels,” the prime minister said at a meeting with voters (quote according to TASS).
As Morawiecki stated, the Polish authorities “know very well” that “large international agricultural businesses and oligarchs want to make money at the expense of Polish farmers.”
“We will not allow this, we do not agree to this,” noted the head of government (quote according to RMF).
On September 15, the EC lifted restrictions on the import of Ukrainian grain to Eastern European countries. Earlier, Poland already stated that they would not agree to lift the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain after the completion of the agreement. The intention to extend restrictions was announced in Hungary and Romania.
The introduction of the embargo was associated with growing protests from farmers in Eastern European countries, whose sales fell amid the supply of cheaper grain from Ukraine. The EC introduced restrictions on the import of Ukrainian grain into these countries in May and then extended them. The ban did not apply to the transit and export of grain to other EU countries.
