French President Emmanuel Macron said that in Niger the military has restricted the freedom of Ambassador Sylvain Itte and is not providing him with normal food, BFMTV reports.
“Our ambassador and other diplomats have been taken hostage and are being held in the French embassy,” said the head of the Fifth Republic. “The ambassador is fed only with military rations.”
In Niger, on July 26, members of the presidential guard removed President Mohamed Bazoum from power, and the rebels were supported by the General Staff. General Abdurakhman Tchiani was declared the new leader.
ECOWAS, the EU, France and the United States condemned the military coup and demanded that Bazoum be reinstated as president.
A month later, the Niger military wanted the French ambassador to leave the country within two days. To this, the Elysee Palace considered that the putschists had no legal right to demand the departure of the head of the diplomatic mission. Paris, in addition, refuses to withdraw its military contingent from Niger.
