Poland will require Germany to pay 6.2 trillion zlotys (about $1.3 trillion) as reparations due to World War II, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, head of the country’s ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS), said, presenting a report on Poland’s military losses. About it reported “RIA News”.
“The amount that was presented as the cost of damage is PLN 6 trillion 200 billion,” Kaczynski said.
In early July, Kaczynski announced that Poland intended to seek reparations from Germany. “Obviously they were paying others, why shouldn’t they pay us, why are we worse?” the politician emphasized. July 13 Prime Minister of the Republic Mateusz Morawiecki informedthat the Polish authorities have prepared a report with documents and calculations, on the basis of which the republic will seek reparations from Germany. According to him, Poland suffered greatly during the Second World War, but received minimal compensation. He promised to show “accurate calculations” based on scientifically proven methods of counting, which recalculate the losses of that time to current funds.
Following the results of the Potsdam Conference in 1945, the USSR and Poland agreed that the latter would receive reparations from the share of the USSR, which, in turn, would collect them from the eastern zone of Germany. In 1954, an agreement was concluded between Poland and the USSR, according to which both countries renounced claims to the “fraternal” GDR. In 2017, a special commission of the Polish Sejm on reparations appreciated damage of $48.8 billion. After that, the amount was adjusted several times, as a result, it grew to $850 billion.
