Peskov: Russia hopes for the prosperity of Kazakhstan and the development of relations with this country

The Russian side hopes that Kazakhstan will be a stable and prosperous country, and relations with it will develop, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation.

According to Peskov, Kazakhstan is Russia’s partner both in bilateral terms and in terms of integration formats.

“It is difficult to overestimate the importance of our bilateral dialogue, alliance and partnership. And we hope that this partnership will continue to develop in all areas, and, of course, we want Kazakhstan to be a prosperous, self-confident, firmly standing, stable country, a stable state,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev earlier today proposed to hold snap presidential elections in the republic in the fall of 2022. He stressed that he puts the interests of the state above all else, and therefore is ready to shorten his term of office. Tokayev also believes that the length of the presidential term should be changed. Tokayev also proposed limiting him to seven years and banning re-election.

Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev became the President of Kazakhstan on March 20, 2019 after the announcement of the resignation of Nursultan Nazarbayev. Nazarbayev has headed the republic since 1990, he has held the presidency for almost 29 years.

According to Articles 41-42 of the current Constitution of Kazakhstan, adopted in 1995, the president is elected for a term of five years and can hold this post for no more than two consecutive terms. In early June of this year, Tokayev announced that he was not going to extend his term of office by amending the country’s Constitution.
