Poland called on the EC to introduce a complete ban on products from Russia and Belarus

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Warsaw proposed to the European Commission to introduce a complete ban on the import of food products from Russia and Belarus. The proposal has already been supported by Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrid Simonyte.

“I am convinced that a joint European solution will be more effective than individual decisions of the countries of the region,” said Donald Tusk during a press conference with the Prime Minister of Lithuania (quoted by Bloomberg).

Mr Tusk added that he would put forward a parliamentary resolution on this issue. Ms. Simonyte expressed support for the initiative at the pan-European level.

A ban on food imports from Russia and Belarus is part of the Polish government’s response to farmers’ demands. They call the flow of agricultural products into the country uncontrollable, and also demand a revision of the EU climate agenda.

Polish farmers are protesting due to duty-free import of Ukrainian agricultural products into the country. They have repeatedly demanded that the authorities close the border with Ukraine. The Polish leadership proposes less radical measures, including the introduction of firm quotas on the import of products.
