Sierra Leone President Maada Biot spoke about plans to put pressure on Putin over Ukraine
African leaders are looking for a way to influence Russian President Vladimir Putin to speed up the end of the conflict with Ukraine, Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Biot said, according to the Financial Times (FT).
“We are looking for a way to put pressure on President Putin and all interested parties,” Maada Biot said, speaking on the eve of sending a peacekeeping mission to Moscow and Kyiv. “So that we can live in peace.”
Sierra Leone buys almost all the food that its 8.4 million citizens consume from abroad, recalls the FT. The country now ranks 112 out of 121 countries in the Global Hunger Index.
On June 16, the leaders of the Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Senegal, Zambia, Uganda and South Africa will travel to Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The next day, a delegation of African heads of state will leave for Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin. Both Kyiv and Moscow, as previously reported, agreed to receive the delegation.
The upcoming talks will focus on discussing the export of Russian fertilizers and Ukrainian grain, the sources said.
