The CNN website published photographs of gold bars seized from Senator Bob Menendez, known for his anti-Russian position.
Earlier it was reported that Democratic Senator from New Jersey Bob Menendez and his wife were charged with bribery. The Department of Justice confiscated the gold bars and $500,000 seized from him.
This is the second time in 10 years that Menendez has been charged with corruption-related crimes. This time, the senator and his wife Nadine Arslanian Menendez are accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for influence.
Prosecutors say the bribes included gold, cash, mortgage payments, compensation and a luxury car.
Menendez has served in the US Senate since 2006. At the same time, Democratic rules in the Senate will force Menendez to resign as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, but he will still be able to serve on the panel.
Menendez is widely known as the author of anti-Russian sanctions. In particular, last year, before the start of the Ukrainian conflict, he came up with a bill directed against Moscow, which he himself called “the mother of all sanctions.”
Moscow added Menendez to its sanctions list in 2014, banning him from entering on a reciprocal basis in connection with US sanctions on Ukraine and Crimea.
