Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov believes that in the case of scientists accused of espionage, there are no tendencies in their association with China. On May 16, it became known about the arrest of a physicist from Novosibirsk, Valery Zvegintsev. He became the third physicist from the Novosibirsk Institute, who was attracted under Art. 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Treason) for the last year.
“Here I would not draw conclusions about any trends. Our relevant special services perform their functions, protect state secrets, control the situation for possible cases related to suspicion of treason. This is a very important work, it is ongoing. It is hardly possible to talk about any trends here,” Mr. Peskov said during a press call.
In the summer of 2022, three physicists from the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok were arrested on suspicion of treason — Director of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Shiplyuk, Chief Researcher of the same Institute Anatoly Maslov and Head of the Laboratory of Quantum Optical Technologies of Novosibirsk State University, Researcher of the Institute of Laser Physics of the Siberian Branch RAS Dmitry Kolker.
Their cases are unrelated. Presumably, it was about the transfer of secret data to the Chinese special services. The son of Dmitry Kolker, Maxim, said that his father lectured to students during an international conference in China. On the third day after his arrest, Dmitry Kolker died in a Moscow hospital. He was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
May 16, employees of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. S. A. Khristianovich Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ITAM SB RAS) published an open letter with a call to save Russian aerodynamic science “from the impending collapse”. In it, they indicated that over the past year, three of their scientists were arrested on suspicion of treason, including Valery Zvegintsev, chief researcher at ITAM SB RAS. The Kremlin saw the appeal of scientists. However, Dmitry Peskov saidthat the Kremlin cannot respond to the letter, since the consideration of criminal cases is the prerogative of the court.
