Peskov: UN reform should be the product of a general consensus

Decisions to reform the United Nations (UN) must be the product of general consensus. This was stated by the press secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov expressed this opinion, answering the question of whether Moscow, together with India, whose prime minister had previously called for UN reform, was ready to promote this idea.

“UN reform is a topic that has been discussed for many years, (question – Ed.) is raised by many states. Anything that can help increase the effectiveness of the UN is extremely important. More <…> decisions along this path should be the product of a common consensus,” Peskov added.

On May 21, it became known that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a G7 meeting announced the need for UN reform, as the organization is not able to prevent conflicts. “Why is the UN, which was created to preserve peace, today unable to prevent conflicts?” declared Modi (quoted by The Economic Times).

At the summit of the heads of the G7 countries, which was held from May 19 to 21 in Hiroshima, UN chief António Guterres also said that the time had come to reform the UN Security Council and the institutions of the Bretton Woods system. According to him, the global financial architecture has become “outdated, dysfunctional and unfair.” In the face of the fighting in Ukraine, the economic upheavals caused by the pandemic, the system has failed to fulfill the function of a “global safety net”. The UN Security Council and the institutions of the Bretton Woods system should be brought into line with the “realities of today’s world,” Guterres said.
