Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin regrets the desire of Sweden and Finland to join NATO. According to him, Russia did not and does not pose a threat to these states.
“We have repeatedly expressed regret in connection with such an orientation towards membership in the alliance of Finland and Sweden. It has been repeatedly said that Russia does not pose a threat to these countries in any way, because we do not have any disputes with these countries, and these countries have never claimed to become “Anti-Russia”,” Peskov said during a press call.
According to him, there were no military threats from Moscow against Sweden and Finland, so their intention to join NATO is not justified.
Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO in May 2022. The decision regarding Sweden stalled amid the action in Stockholm with the burning of the Koran at the Turkish embassy.
On March 2, the Hungarian Parliament once again moved voting on the ratification of the membership of Sweden and Finland in NATO. It should take place no earlier than March 20. President of Finland Sauli Niinistö 17 March intends meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and clarify Ankara’s position on Helsinki’s entry into the alliance.
