Nine people arrested in Poland on suspicion of spying for Russia

The Polish Internal Security Agency has detained nine people suspected of working for Russian intelligence, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski said. transmits Polish Radio.

According to the official, all those detained are foreigners “from the eastern border”, six of them were arrested. The country’s prosecutor’s office charged them with spying for Russia and participating in an organized criminal group.

According to investigators, they organized monitoring of the movement of trains by rail, documenting the movement of vehicles with weapons for Ukraine.

The minister told reporters that the group posed a serious threat to the country’s critical infrastructure. According to RMF FM, the security forces detained the suspects after they discovered hidden cameras on important routes and railway junctions that recorded traffic on the tracks. This is mainly about the section of railway tracks near the airport in Yasenka, which is the main transshipment point for Western weapons and ammunition for Ukraine.

At the end of December last year, the military department of the prosecutor’s office presented a Russian and a Belarusian were charged with espionage for the benefit of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian General Staff (GRU). Those detained back in April 2022 are accused of conducting espionage activities in favor of Russian military intelligence from 2017 to April 2022. The investigation established that the detainees were collecting information about military installations “of decisive importance for the defense of the republic.” In addition, they received information about the “combat efficiency, morale and functioning of the units” with their subsequent transfer to the intelligence service, the prosecutor said.
