Peskov: the decision to organize the state funeral of Gorbachev will be made today

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that the decision on the state funeral of the last general secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU Mikhail Gorbachev will be made in the Kremlin today. The participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the funeral of the only president of the USSR depends on the wishes of Mr. Gorbachev’s relatives.
“I can’t say for sure yet. Today this issue will be dealt with. A decision will be made. So far, no decisions have been made… We don’t know yet how it will all turn out. The procedure will depend on the wishes of relatives and friends. There is no information yet,” Mr. Peskov explained to reporters (quoted from “Interfax”). Earlier sources “Interfax” reported that the politician’s funeral would not be of a state character.
Mikhail Gorbachev died August 30 at the age of 92. The politician will be buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery next to his wife Raisa. Since 2020, Mr. Gorbachev has been under medical supervision due to kidney disease.
