Russia has been and will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Syria after the earthquake, said Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov.
“As for our country, we are currently providing assistance to our Syrian friends through various departments and will continue to do so,” the Kremlin spokesman answered the question of whether Russia is negotiating with the Syrian authorities about providing humanitarian assistance to Syria after the earthquake.
On the eve of February 9, Syrian Health Minister Hassan al-Gabash declared that the country needs to provide medical equipment and medicines to rescue victims of the earthquake. Answering the question whether Russia is ready to increase assistance to Syria, Peskov said that contacts on this matter are constantly being made. “And within the framework of these contacts, the Syrian leadership provides information about their needs. All of them are considered very promptly and, as far as possible, of course, assistance will continue,” the Kremlin spokesman emphasized.
At the same time, answering a question from journalists about whether Russia is negotiating with Syria on opening borders for international humanitarian organizations, Peskov noted that Syria is a sovereign state. “And they independently make decisions on the mode of operation of the borders, taking into account such force majeure circumstances that arose after the devastating earthquake,” the Kremlin spokesman said.
