Peskov is unaware of laws banning rainbows in Russia – Kommersant

The Kremlin is not familiar with the case of the arrest of a resident of Nizhny Novgorod who wore earrings with a rainbow, said presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov. He is unaware of any laws in the country that prohibit rainbows.

Mr. Peskov was asked during a press call whether the Kremlin was familiar with the case and whether rainbows were banned in Russia. “I can’t answer your question. I am not aware of any laws that prohibit rainbows in Russia. “To be honest, I don’t know all the details of this case, so I can hardly comment on it,” the press secretary replied.

Last week the Nizhny Novgorod court arrested a local resident for five days for earrings in the shape of a frog, painted in seven colors of the rainbow. The girl was charged with public display of symbols of an extremist organization under Part 1 of Art. 20.3 Code of Administrative Offences. At the same time, the court was unable to determine exactly what signs of prohibited symbols were on the earrings, and referred to the recognition of the “international LGBT movement” (recognized as an extremist organization in the Russian Federation and prohibited). Member of the Presidential Council for Human Rights Eva Merkacheva will ask The Supreme Court will clarify what actions and what symbols indicate LGBT propaganda.
