Peskov: foreigners may face inconvenience when traveling to Russia

Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov again commented on the proposal of the EU countries to ban the issuance of Schengen visas to Russians. According to him, if such a decision is made, Europeans may also face inconvenience when traveling to Russia.

Peskov stressed that Moscow is closely following the discussion of the issue of visa restrictions for Russian citizens. He added that the visa ban would require a “counter-reaction” from Russia.

“There is nothing good about this, their people will also face inconvenience when they come here. That is, it will be another spiral of this reckless Russophobia, ”Peskov said (quote according to TASS).

On August 30-31, an informal meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers is scheduled. One of the main topics for discussion will be the issue of issuing Schengen visas to Russians. Earlier today Poland, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia demanded from the European Commission to tighten the visa policy towards Russia. Otherwise, they intend to take measures to restrict the entry of Russians into Europe on their own.

At the same time, a number of countries do not support a complete ban on issuing visas to Russians and urge the rest of the EU countries to find a compromise solution. Yes, in Germany suggested suspend the visa facilitation agreement with Russia. There are also ideas to increase the cost of visas and slow down the process of issuing them. In addition, a proposal is being discussed to limit entry to Europe only for citizens of a certain category. For example, EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell thinksthat visas should not be issued to oligarchs.

The day before, Peskov said that the discussion of such initiatives in the EU can be explained by “irrationality bordering on insanity.” He also promised that Russia would not leave such decisions unanswered.
