Who doesn’t know yet The Little Daisies (1966), masterpiece of Vera Chytilova (1919-2014), director of the Czech New Wave, must hasten to discover it. The two protagonists, Marie 1 the brunette (Jitka Cerhova) and Marie 2 the blonde (Ivana Karbanova), take the viewer on a crazy deconstruction of the world, in the footsteps of Jean-Luc Godard, Dada poetry and American experimental cinema. . The film is released in theaters in a restored copy, and one of the two actresses, Jitka Cerhova, will come to present the film at the Reflet Médicis, in Paris, on Wednesday August 31 at 8 p.m.
The two heroines die of boredom in Prague, in the socialist republic which was going to know its “Spring” in 1968. Refusing all the conventions, as well as the gloomy and morbid society of the time, Marie 1 and Marie 2 decide to live like of the “depraved”, according to their expression. The images of gears and bombs in the credits at the start of the film give us the mood: chaos, chaos and a half. Destruction becomes their watchword and nothing can resist their passage, from a frenzied session in a cabaret to the restaurant table, where they gorge themselves, for free.

If eating means “to bite into life”, then Mary 1 and Mary 2 devour it, in a sumptuous banquet scene worthy of Feast (1973), from Marco Ferreri (1928-1997). The two high rollers are fueled by insolence: “Is she old, your old lady? », asks Marie 2 to an elderly gentleman who invites them to the restaurant, waiting for the sexual reward after the meal. He will remain hungry.
This jewel of pop art had impressed in its time Jacques Rivette (1928-2016), who had interviewed at length – with Michel Delahaye (1929-2016) – the director in February 1968 in The Notebooks of the Cinema (#198). Through the grace of a collage of images and sounds, of colored filters, the filmmaker creates a highly stylized account of the absurd. The tandem of girls moves like figurines on a game board, the recurring checkerboard pattern (on swimsuits, on the bedroom wall, etc.) evoking a game of checkers… or chess.
