Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov commented on the pardon of ex-Ministry of Internal Affairs officer Sergei Khadzhikurbanov, who was sentenced to 20 years for organizing the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya. He was released from serving his sentence for participating in a military operation in Ukraine. Mr. Peskov said that the “resonance of the case” does not provide grounds for refusing a pardon.
“There is a certain practice that is being implemented, and as far as I know, there are no exceptions to this practice (regarding the resonance of the case.— “Ъ”) No. More precisely, there are exceptions, but they do not relate to the topic of the resonance of this or that case,” the Kremlin representative explained during a press call.
Anna Politkovskaya was shot on October 7, 2006 in the elevator of her own house in Moscow. The person who ordered the murder has not yet been identified. Former Moscow police officer Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov was convicted of organizing it; in 2012, the court sentenced him to 11 years of strict regime. In 2014, the perpetrators of the murder, Lom-Ali Gaitukaev and his nephew Rustam Makhmudov, who shot at the journalist, received life sentences. In 2017, Lom-Ali Gaitukaev died in a prison hospital in Vologda. Accomplices of the murderers Ibragim Makhmudov and Dzhabrail Makhmudov (Rustam’s brothers) received 12 years and 13 years 6 months of strict regime.
On the pardon of Sergei Khadzhikurbanov became known the day before. Lawyer Alexey Mikhalchik said that “in a sense, justice has triumphed.” Children of the murdered journalist Vera and Ilya Politkovsky considerthat the decision to pardon Khadzhikurbanov is not evidence that he has atoned for his guilt and repented, but a “violation of the memory” of their mother.
