Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Russian army should “push back” Ukraine’s military infrastructure to create a “sanitary zone” needed to prevent shelling of border regions. On the eve of June 13, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about the possible creation of a “sanitary zone” in Ukraine.
“In order to ensure security, as the Kiev regime acquires more sophisticated and longer-range weapons, this military infrastructure will have to be moved to a sanitary distance in order to ensure the safety of citizens,” Peskov said during a conference call.
According to him, the creation of a “sanitary zone” will help prevent “shelling, bombing of social infrastructure, civilians, civilian dwellings” from the territory controlled by Kyiv.
On June 13, at a meeting with military corporals in the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin declaredthat in the event that frequent shelling of the Russian border regions does not stop, Russia can create a “sanitary zone” on the territories of Ukraine bordering on it.
“We must, apparently, consider the issue – I say this very carefully – in order to create some kind of sanitary zone on the territory of Ukraine at such a distance from which it would be impossible to get our territory,” Mr. Putin said at the time.
By opinion Head of the State Duma Committee on Defense Andrei Kartapolov, the “sanitary zone” on the territory of Ukraine should be demilitarized, that is, it should not contain long-range weapons.
