Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov explained the reason for the increase in the number of people wishing to serve under a contract. The Ministry of Defense noted a sharp increase in applicants in the last week and a half.

“This is evidence of the high internal mobilization of society and consolidation around Vladimir Putin and the tasks that lie within the framework of the special operation,” Mr. Peskov said.

Earlier today, April 3, the press service of the Ministry of Defense reported about a sharp increase in the number of people wishing to serve under a contract over the past week and a half. Over the past 10 days, about 16 thousand citizens have signed contracts to participate in a special military operation. According to the ministry, since the beginning of the year, more than 100 thousand people have entered military service under contract.

In December 2023, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced his intention to increase the size of the Russian army in 2024 to 1.5 million people. The number of contract soldiers is planned to increase to 745 thousand people. According to the minister, the contingent of the Russian army as of December 2023 was 1.15 million people.
