The threat of creating a nuclear bomb by Ukraine remains, Mikhail Ulyanov, permanent representative of the Russian Federation to international organizations in Vienna, said at a briefing.
“Of course, in theory, Ukraine has the necessary potential to create a dirty bomb… In principle, indeed, there is such a threat,” he said.
Ulyanov noted that since Soviet times, Ukraine has been an advanced country in terms of nuclear technology, and Kyiv already had similar plans.
Earlier on October 23, RIA Novosti, citing sources in different countries reportedthat Kyiv is preparing a provocation in Ukraine related to the detonation of a “dirty bomb” or a low-yield nuclear weapon, the purpose of which is to accuse the Russian Federation of using weapons of mass destruction and launch a “powerful anti-Russian campaign” in the world. At the Russian Ministry of Defense later confirmed this information.
Following these reports, IAEA experts visited Ukraine to identify any possible undeclared nuclear activities and materials. On November 9, the director general of the agency, Rafael Grossi, announced that the IAEA not found signs of work on a “dirty bomb” on the territory of Ukraine.
At the end of November, Grossi stated that the IAEA strengthen its presence at all Ukrainian nuclear power plants in order to secure the energy infrastructure.
