Perm Polytechnic University will host an all-Russian marathon in support of the donor movement

The All-Russian marathon #Let’s Join in support of bone marrow donation will be held on September 15 in Perm. In the assembly hall of the Perm Polytechnic University on this day at 14:00 there will be an interactive lecture “I can. I must. I am a bone marrow donor” about the safety and social significance of donation, which will be held by the head of the donation development department of the Kirov Research Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion of the FMBA of Russia Natalya Malysheva. Anyone can take part in the lecture.

Before this, a monomarathon will be held around the city’s attractions at a distance of 42 km from the ambassador of bone marrow donation, athlete Artem Aliskerov. Previously, he was able to overcome leukemia and underwent 31 courses of chemotherapy. The race starts at 7:00 from the Perm Regional Blood Transfusion Station (Lebedeva St., 54). The finish will take place at 14.00 at the main building of the Perm Polytechnic University.

Also on this day, from 8:00 to 13:00, a mobile complex will be equipped on Oktyabrskaya Square, where blood service teams will receive everyone who wants to join the ranks of donors. From 14:00 to 16:00, the blood transfusion station will operate in room 159 of the main building of PNRPU.

It should be noted that the marathon takes place in all regions of Russia and is timed to coincide with the anniversary of the creation of the Federal Register of Bone Marrow and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors, as well as World Bone Marrow Donor Day, which is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September.

The main goal is to attract young, active and healthy people to donate. Currently, there are 205 thousand people in the Russian bone marrow donor register. The goal is to increase their number to half a million so that a suitable donor for patients can be found without problems.

Doctors explain: what is required from the donor is not the bone marrow itself, but the cells that it produces. A person is given a special drug that expels them into the blood. The procedure is carried out on a regular donor chair.

“They take blood from one of his arms, pass it through a special cell separator, filter out the necessary bone marrow cells, and immediately the blood returns to him. And so on for several cycles. 250-350-450 milliliters of the necessary hematopoietic stem cells or bone marrow cells that are needed for transplantation to the patient are collected, says Natalya Malysheva, head of the donation development department of the Kirov Research Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion of the FMBA of Russia.

The marathon will be held in 72 cities of Russia and will end on November 10 at the site of the International Exhibition and Forum “Russia”.
