The competitive program of the Unified Games of the Special Olympics, in which athletes with intellectual disabilities participated, has ended.
Such a large-scale forum was held in Russia for the first time, and Kazan became its place. Winners were determined in 18 sports – both summer and winter. Some of them provided for the performance of unified teams, that is, those that included participants with and without special features. “Special Olympics has a noble mission to help people with intellectual disabilities adapt to life in society, including through sports,” said Odes Baysultanov, Deputy Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation.
Both athletes and coaches noted the excellent organization of the event. Modern arenas, comfortable accommodation, quality food – all this was at the service of the participants. At the same time, the level of competition in almost all types of the program turned out to be high.
According to the results of the Unified Games of the Special Olympics, the top three in the team standings were representatives of the Sverdlovsk Region, the Republic of Bashkortostan and St. Petersburg.
