Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ began the Easter service at the Cathedral Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin arrived at the temple.
The Easter service starts 30-45 minutes before midnight. At midnight, a procession is performed, followed by Easter matins and Divine Liturgy. The Easter service continues throughout the week. In 2023, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Easter on April 16.
Vladimir Putin has been taking part in the Easter service in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow for almost all the years of his presidency. Only twice he was in other places – in 2003 (he was on a visit to Tajikistan, participated in worship in the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas the Prelate in Dushanbe) and in 2020 (he lit a candle in the chapel in Novo-Ogaryovo).
