According to CNN, citing a Department of Justice press release, a New York woman was sentenced to four months in prison “for interfering with flight crew members.” She made a brawl in the first class of the plane.
She is required to pay American Airlines $9,123 in restitution.
“The rebellious and intimidating behavior of Pichardo and her co-defendant on an American Airlines flight from Dallas to Los Angeles in February 2021 prompted the flight to be rerouted to Phoenix so the two of them could be escorted off the plane. They were traveling first class,” the prosecutors said.
Ana Laura Botello, Pichardo’s lawyer, declined to comment on the verdict.
The co-defendant, Lisa S. Rodriguez, will only be sentenced in November.
“There is a line between boorish behavior on an airplane and criminal activity, and the defendant has clearly crossed the line,” U.S. Attorney Gary Resteino said in a press release. “First class passengers are not immune from prosecution.”
