United Russia senators propose to make it mandatory to use Cyrillic fonts in advertising. If the draft law submitted by them to the State Duma is adopted, then foreign letters and hieroglyphs will be used only to indicate brand names and trademarks that have passed state registration.
As it became known to “MK”, in order to clear advertising texts from Latin and other foreign letters, senators propose to amend the law “On Advertising”. Parliamentarians note that the law “On the state language in the Russian Federation” adopted back in 2005 requires the use of the Russian language in advertising, but in practice this is often not enforced. According to their observation, today in advertising “foreign language elements predominate.” Often, Russian names are transmitted in Latin, it is not uncommon for some of the Cyrillic characters to be replaced by letters of the Latin alphabet, as a result of which the graphic and phonetic appearance of the Russian word is distorted. In addition, this is a direct violation of the law “On the languages of the peoples of the Russian Federation”, which states that the alphabets of the state language of Russia and the state languages of the republics are built on the graphic basis of the Cyrillic alphabet. The adoption of the bill will have to protect the use of the Cyrillic script in the advertising environment.
