Paris was unable to host the Swimming World Cup due to inadequate water quality in the Seine

The International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics) was forced to cancel World Cup in open water swimming in Paris. The organization, after consulting with the organizers and health authorities, came to the conclusion that it was impossible to hold competitions in the Seine due to the inadequate quality of the water in the river.
The World Cup, which was scheduled to be held in the French capital on August 5 and 6, was supposed to be a dress rehearsal for water competitions before the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. The mayor’s office plans to use the Seine for competitions among triathletes and marathon swimmers. However, due to the recent heavy rains in Paris, “the quality of the water in the Seine has fallen below the acceptable standards necessary to maintain the health of swimmers.” “World Aquatics is disappointed that the quality of the water in the Seine has led to the cancellation of the Open Water Swimming World Cup, but the health of our athletes must always be our top priority,” the federation said in a statement.
The city hall of Paris assured that in the near future new treatment facilities will start working on the river and the water quality will be of the proper level by the Olympics. And to make heavy rains no longer a problem, the city authorities intend to put into operation a special reservoir the size of 20 Olympic pools, where sewage will be collected.
Swimming in the Seine was banned as early as 1923. City Hall intends to lift this ban in 2025, allowing citizens to swim in three areas of the Seine.
