Orthodox Christians begin Dormition Fast

Orthodox Christians began the Dormition Fast. It will last only two weeks – until the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is celebrated on August 28. However, this is a very strict fast, comparable in food restrictions to the Great.
Assumption is one of the twelfth (main) holidays of the Orthodox Church. That is why there is such a thorough preparation for it. Believers imitate the Virgin Mary, who, a few days before her death, stopped eating food and prayed, preparing for a meeting with the heavenly Father.
During Dormition Fast, believers traditionally abstain from meat, milk, eggs, and fish. Seafood is blessed to eat only on the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. It falls on August 19 according to the new style. However, the measure of fasting must be determined for each person separately. It is better to do this with the blessing of your confessor.
There are two holidays during the Assumption Fast, which in Russia are usually called Spas. The first – Honey – August 14. On this day, after the liturgy, the honey of the new harvest will be consecrated. During the second, Apple, Savior, grapes and apples are consecrated. This Savior coincides with the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
