US residents in 2022 lost $10.3 billion due to various fraudulent schemes on the Internet. CNN reports a five-year record for damage, citing FBI data: at the end of last year, it exceeded the previous annual figure by $ 3 billion.
Phishing attacks have become the most common scheme. Over 300,000 Americans are reported to have been affected by them last year. However, their losses were relatively small – only $52 million.
Data leaks affected 58.9 thousand US residents. From fraudulent schemes with goods that are not delivered to customers, 51.7 thousand Americans suffered in 2022.
The efforts of intruders, as is common throughout the world, are aimed primarily at older people who are poorly versed in modern technologies and are especially prone to suggestion. Losses in this age category amount to $ 3.1 billion. As a rule, representatives of the older generation become victims of fake call centers. It is noted that most of them are geographically located in India.
