— Leonid Mikhailovich, how did you get into the profession?

– When I was in the fifth grade, we wrote an essay on the topic “What do I want to become?” And I wrote that I want to be a surgeon and cut out appendicitis. And so it happened. I entered the pediatric faculty of the Second Medical Institute and treated children all my life. I trained as a pediatrician and work as a pediatrician. However, I did my first operation in my fourth year during student practice on an adult patient.

Was it appendicitis?

Yes, one woman.

— Why did you want to operate specifically on appendicitis? Was there a surgeon in the family?

– Who knows why the child decided so? I have an absolutely non-medical family. My father was a military man, my mother graduated from a school for working youth and worked in different places.

Do you regret that your whole life is connected with medicine?

“There was never any reason to regret it. Did everything right.

Do you remember any interesting patients?

— There are no uninteresting patients, I never divide them into interesting and uninteresting. Everyone needs help. I always fight to the end for everyone. And happiness when you can help, when a person recovers before your eyes.

Would you change anything if you could turn back time?

“I wouldn’t change anything at all. I am completely satisfied with what I do and what I did. They say that a person should plant a tree, build a house and give birth to a child. I have it all. – I do not like lies, meanness. I love decency. I just hate two-faced people, all my life I said and did what I think.

– What is the secret of your cheerfulness, health?

– I don’t have any secrets. I live like everyone else. Only I don’t have bad habits – I am a non-drinker and non-smoker.

Are you eating right, getting enough sleep?

— No, there is no such thing. In general, everything is without features. The only thing I love is buckwheat porridge with fried onions. And Hercules on the water.

— What do you do for active longevity? Are you friends with sports?

– I was not actively involved in sports, I was not a master of sports. But at the medical institute he was deputy chairman of the sports club. He was engaged in athletics, volleyball, boxing in the Dynamo sports club in his youth.

– Do you maintain an active lifestyle now? Now many people walk with Scandinavian walking sticks…

– I have sticks, but something I don’t really go with them …

— You are a world-famous doctor, a talented surgeon and a person with a wealth of knowledge and life experience. Do you have any useful tips for our readers?

— To be honest, I don’t know what advice can affect everyone. People are not like one another – each has its own speed, its own needs and capabilities. So I will refrain from advice. I will say, probably, only that one should not be afraid of age.

What role does family play in your life?

“Family is very important to me. But, to be honest, I’m not a very good family man, because I devote more time to work.

– Still?

— Yes, so far. Every day there are new challenges to be solved. I really want health care to improve in our country, so that everyone is satisfied with the work of our doctors.
