The Upper Lars checkpoint, the most famous point of entry into Georgia from Russia, has become somewhat of a fashionable place in recent days: thousands of people leaving Russia are stuck in a many-hour (and sometimes many-day) traffic jam towards the border. Already in the first days of the excitement, some people leaving, stuck in traffic jams, began to sell cars at a reasonable price. MK learned how the spontaneous car market works in North Ossetia.
Who first came up with the idea to leave the car in a traffic jam and go to the border crossing on foot is unknown: there are several online chats in instant messengers regarding crossing the border, and besides, the “inventor” of the method could not write anything about this on the Web at all. But clearly he was a nervous and impulsive person.
But his followers quickly realized: after all, you can not leave the car, but sell it to the locals. And now, on September 27, auto forums and word of mouth spread: in the famous traffic jam on Upper Lars, cars are being sold literally for next to nothing!
Announcements were placed directly in the general chat about Upper Lars. In the same places where they ask for advice on crossing the border, they post cries for help after losing a cat on a walk (they searched for tens of thousands of users, found it), where they broadcast announcements about “humanitarian” water and food …
In the same place, ads like this still come across: “I’m selling it urgently, I’m standing on Redant (this is a village near the highway not far from Vladikavkaz).” In the picture – an impressive, albeit middle-aged, “Kruzak”, and the price is really “sweet” – 450 thousand rubles.
Other options on the “stock exchange”: Mercedes-Benz E-class 2004, five-liter (that is, brutal power and with the same tax – not a very family “car”, clearly a male toy). Ask strictly in cash 300 thousand. A more practical C-class of the same “star” brand of 2012 release: already 950 thousand rubles. But because it is not so old and more livable. And quite budget-regional “Priora” in 2010 … 200 thousand rubles.
Let’s face it: of course, compared to Moscow prices in the summer of 2022, this is not so expensive. But it doesn’t smell like a freebie either.
“Now it is, but in the first two days you could buy interesting things at very interesting prices,” says a resident of Vladikavkaz, who monitors such ads and constantly offers to “buy your car from any point in the traffic jam.” Let’s say people were selling a five-year-old crossover for 700,000. “Solaris” fresh – for 200 thousand, such prices have not been available anywhere for a long time.
Indeed, the peak of this light madness seems to have already passed: since the evening of September 28, the once-allowed border crossing on foot and on bicycles has been banned. Now you can get to that side only by car – driver or passenger. Therefore, if you decide to desperately sell a car, then only in order to get hooked on someone else (also usually not free). Here, by the way, is another business: they sell seats in cars that are already close to the barrier.
“I’ve already passed the border, I’m waiting for my family on this side,” a 32-year-old photographer from St. Petersburg, who moved to Georgia, told MK. – We decided that I was going to sit down as a fellow traveler, and my wife was in a traffic jam.
So, there were very few car sellers. But there were a lot of buyers: one of the users writes messages every hour in the spirit of “Anyone who want to sell a car (2017 and later) cheaply? Write in a personal!”. Or: “I’m looking for a car to buy up to 300 thousand.” The most generous (or counting on a premium): “I will buy a car up to 1 million rubles.”
“I already have a sales contract with me, we fill it out on the spot, the insurance is already my problem, we’ll arrange everything, the money is in hand,” the reseller Georgy explained the sale process. – Market price, but I need a small percentage of the transaction. Not for thanks, I work!
An alternative service to selling has also appeared: those who do not want to part with the “swallows” can entrust them to drivers who, for a moderate fee, will deliver them across Russia and even look after the car for as long as necessary.
“It costs 20,000 rubles plus the cost of gasoline and airline tickets,” says Ekaterina, who is engaged in this business. – You can add me to the insurance for free, because I have a long experience and not a single accident. I can pick up a car from a traffic jam on a bicycle, no problem. The cargo category is open, I constantly travel by minibus.
It is interesting that not only locals, but also residents of Central Russia, and even Belarusians “rushed” into this suddenly opened market niche in a few days: for example, Anton Kozyarsky, a resident of Minsk, also advertises his services “to look after your car until you settle down with business “. And the locals, that is, the inhabitants of North Ossetia, have two more “glades” that are not very accessible to non-residents. This is the delivery of gasoline and batteries (10 liters of fuel will cost 5-20 thousand rubles, a battery – 10 thousand). As well as the pass of people to the Upper Lars itself: they write that the fee is 20-30 thousand rubles.
