Explosions on the strings of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines at the bottom of the Baltic Sea occurred near the Danish island of Bornholm. “At one time I met the head of the Special Purpose Underwater Committee under the Government of the Russian Federation, Tengiz Borisov,” says Professor Vladimir Kuznetsov. – Then they thought about raising the nuclear submarine K-278 “Komsomolets” from the 6th division of the 1st flotilla of the Northern Fleet, which sank on April 7, 1989 while returning from the third combat service in the Norwegian Sea as a result of a fire in two adjacent compartments . There were torpedoes on the submarine, and plutonium in nuclear warheads. Professor Kuznetsov says that the Germans at one time produced huge amounts of chemical warfare agents: mustard gas, lewisite, arsenide, adamsite.

– The victorious countries after the war did not know what to do with chemical munitions that were confiscated in German military storage facilities. As a result, they decided to flood them at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Chemical weapons dumps are located east of the Danish island of Bornholm and in the Skagerrak and Kattegat straits.

Vladimir Mikhailovich says that the allies dumped barrels of chemical munitions and drowned containers of poison along with the old ships on which they were transported.

– According to experts, more than 300 thousand chemical warfare agents can be found at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. These are, in fact, “chemical time bombs.” Five locations are indicated on the burial map of captured German chemical weapons. One of the burial grounds, and quite a large one, is located just in the area of ​​Bornholm Island, not far from the place where the pipelines were blown up.

Specialists who conducted research back in the 90s warned not to touch these burials in any case, so that mustard gas and lewisite would not be actively released into the water. According to scientists, a very small amount of these substances that enter the human body can knock down the genetic code.

– In the end, no one began to raise and dispose of captured chemical weapons that lay at the bottom of the Baltic. They talked and forgot, considering it inappropriate and dangerous. We were not particularly concerned about this issue. Because all the main burials were in the territorial waters of Sweden and Denmark. The closest to us is in the Baltic, 65 miles from Liepaja, southeast of the island of Gotland.

There were cases when these barrels with mustard gas and lewisite were caught by bottom trawls. Although these areas should be closed to fishing. There are no precise geographic references. It happened that the ship was moving and barrels were dropped from it all the way. Dispersion of containers with military chemicals is quite large.

In December 2021, the question was raised about whether the dumping of chemical weapons near the island of Bornholm, owned by Denmark, could pose a threat to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Danish Ambassador Karsten Sendergard assured that there was no reason to worry about the safe operation of Nord Stream 2. They say that the Danish authorities have done everything possible to bypass the repository when laying the gas pipeline.

On the night of September 26, the pipelines were blown up.
