India will launch OneWeb satellites for the first time on October 22 from the Sriharikota spaceport, this will be the first launch for India since the termination of the OneWeb contract with Russia, according to Indian Defense News.
OneWeb is a satellite system designed to provide broadband internet. In 2015, OneWeb signed a contract with Russia to launch satellites into orbit. From 2019 to February 2022, Russia carried out 13 launches to place OneWeb satellites into orbit, all of them successful. After the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, cooperation was terminated, on April 20, OneWeb signed a contract with the Indian company NewSpace India Limited.
The first Indian launch of 36 OneWeb satellites will reportedly be carried out using a three-stage GSLV MK-III rocket, the heaviest in the history of Indian astronautics. This is the first time this missile has been used commercially.
NewSpace India Limited said that the first launch of OneWeb satellites by an Indian rocket would be a “historic achievement”.
