In memory of Jonah’s stay in the whale’s belly, on October 5, it was forbidden to eat fish in Russia. In addition, it was not recommended to catch it, as well as to sell and buy it.
Hieromartyr Foka was revered as a protector from fires. On this day, he was asked to protect the house from fire, but they themselves had to not make a mistake and check their home for fire safety. Also on October 5, it was forbidden to burn leaves, so as not to cause trouble.
They got up early in the morning on this day, even notorious couch potatoes. It was believed that if you sleep for a long time on Jonah and Foka, you can incur insomnia and financial problems.
According to popular beliefs, the wind-listoder encouraged all evil spirits to harm people. In order to protect themselves and their home from evil forces, on this day, aspen stakes were driven into the ground in the corners of the yard and at the gate. And they also carried bark or a branch of aspen with them to protect themselves from the autumn fever.
Radishes were often served on the table that day – in honor of the end of the harvesting season.
Natural signs on October 5 are as follows:
– a thunderstorm with thunder on this day portends a warm autumn and a harsh winter;
– if the moon is red – expect a strong wind;
– in the morning the temperature is below zero – winter will come early;
– In the evening fog fell – in the coming days the weather will be good.
