NYT: Ukrainian prostitutes began to work for $6 per hour

The New York Times said in its material about how the life of Ukrainian prostitutes has changed due to hostilities.

As noted in the article, prostitution is illegal in Ukraine, but tolerated by the authorities and before the outbreak of hostilities, the country was one of the most popular destinations for sex tourism in Europe. According to the newspaper, the industry employed 53,000 sex workers. At the same time, now priestesses of love, who before that were a socially unprotected category of the population, are facing increased danger – in settlements full of armed men, and there is practically no help for HIV-infected people, and the fight against this disease has come to naught.

Journalists cite the story of some women who, in the village of Kamianske in the Dnepropetrovsk region, are trying to find clients on the side of the road. One of them, named Tatyana, said that soldiers with weapons approached her and demanded a discount, and she could not refuse. They asked to come in for one hour, but then demanded more time. “I come and entertain them all night for the same money,” she said.

Another woman, Lyudmila, said she now charges about $6 an hour, which is half the pre-war rate. According to her, even her regular clients have stopped coming because they don’t have money.

According to her, some soldiers are kind, they give her tips and give her flowers. But another woman, Elena, said she refused to get into a car if there were several men in it.

Women noted that some men negotiate for 12 dollars, and then pay only 7 dollars, explaining this by the fact that now they earn less.

Rita and Vlada, who work in the brothel, said that now there are practically no foreign clients. Previously, customers gave good tips and women even forgot to receive a salary from the owner of the business. And now they only have $40 left.
