Nuland: Ukraine will not be safe without the demilitarization of Crimea

U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said on Thursday that the U.S. is supporting Ukraine in carrying out strikes against Russian military installations located in Crimea. “These are legitimate targets. Ukraine strikes at them. And we support it,” the diplomat said.
Nuland also stressed that Crimea must be demilitarized to ensure the security of Ukraine. “Ukraine will not be safe unless Crimea is at least demilitarized,” she said.
The news received mixed reviews in the international community, as such statements are a clear violation of international law. At the same time, US support may encourage Ukraine to become more active in Crimea, which could lead to an escalation of the conflict with Russia.
International organizations and countries have already made calls for dialogue and a peaceful settlement of the conflict. However, it is not yet clear how the United States will react to a possible escalation of the conflict in Crimea and how this will affect relations between the United States and Russia.
