This year’s Nobel Prize in Literature winner, Norwegian writer Jun Fosse, misspelled the word “literature” by spelling it with just a “t” instead of the double “t” required by Norwegian spelling standards (litteratur). The newspaper Verdens gang reports this.

The incident occurred while Fosse was signing a chair in the Nobel Museum restaurant, which is considered one of the traditions surrounding Nobel events in Stockholm. Earlier, the 2022 prize winner, French publicist Annie Hernault, left her autograph on the same chair.

“Now I see that I made a mistake in a hurry. A pure typo. Of course, I know how to spell “literature” in Norwegian…”, Fosse explained in response to a request from the publication.

The writer suggested that he might have been confused by English spelling, since there the word “literature” is spelled with one “t” (literature).
