No shortage of Russian chips for foreign passports is expected – Kommersant

The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade reported that there is no risk of a shortage of Russian chips for biometric foreign passports, which the country faced in February of this year.

“There are no risks: production is ongoing, all orders are being fulfilled in full. As you know, applications for international passports are being accepted again from June 1, there are no queues or problems,” said “RIA News” Deputy head of the department Vasily Shpak.

At the beginning of February 2023, “State Services” stopped accepting applications for new Russian foreign passports. Goznak reported that problems with the issuance and production of new documents arose due to a lack of necessary microcircuits. On April 11, 2023, the general director of the Mikron plant (a key Russian supplier of chips), Gulnara Khasyanova, announced that the company had found a replacement for the foreign materials used. June 1 Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs reportedthat acceptance of applications for international passports with electronic storage media has been resumed.
