Nikolai Tsiskaridze made frank confessions about children, envy and the Bolshoi Theater

It was about literally everything: about the personality of Nikolai Tsiskaridze himself, about creativity, about the world of ballet art in general, about the appointment of Valery Gergiev to the post of general director of the Bolshoi Theater, and about many other things that interested the interlocutors of the star guest – MK readers.
This time Nikolai Tsiskaridze immediately identified two of the most interesting questions for himself and awarded the participants of the live broadcast two prizes.
One of the winners’ questions was: “Which roles do you prefer to play – princes or demonic personalities?”
Nikolai Tsiskaridze:
– Princes, of course. I can tell you, demonic roles are very easy to play, especially with my appearance. With the figure that I had, it was enough to put on a dark suit, and I was already becoming the most noticeable. And playing a positive hero, especially in a genre like ballet, where you are deprived of expressive means – vocals – is much more difficult. And then, in the entire classical repertoire, princes are staged much less favorably than princesses. And remaining in history as a person who is remembered is extremely difficult. I am incredibly happy that to this day, all the princes whom I performed have not yet been replaced. Because not a single person sounds in this repertoire. Yes, they call one name, another, they say, they say, he is such a sweet boy… But in order for a wave to go out, that there is a stream of spectators for this person, this is not the case. And on the one hand, I’m sad, because I worked with many students, but on the other hand, I’m pleased, because I’m still a winner. So being a prince is much more difficult.
Author of this question Olga Politsan was awarded by the star guest with an award in the form of a book with the dedicatory inscription “My theater. Through the pages of the diary. II”.
The second question – the winner was: “Which hero is closer to you – Vronsky, Levin or Karenin? And why?”
Nikolai Tsiskaridze:
– Karenin. I’ve been a fan of his from the very beginning. I love this novel very much, I love re-reading it, because over time you change your attitude towards it. Levin has always aroused my respect, but his lengthy thoughts are not mine. And Karenin always knew how to serve. And with such service to the cause, with an understanding of honor and duty – I always liked this person the most.
A prize in the form of an invitation for two persons to the evening of the ballet “Vivat, Academy!” received Nadezhda Liman.

About loneliness
I often do not need an interlocutor and my own company does not irritate me.
About true friendship
When you communicate with someone and you are happy to remain silent with this person, this is what true friendship actually means. This means: this person is so pleasant to you that you can not only chat with him, but also remain silent. And it costs a lot.
On the appointment of Valery Gergiev
I am incredibly happy that a master of such a level as Valery Gergiev has finally crossed the threshold of my native theater. Because from the moment Alexander Lazarev left and, unfortunately, such great conductors as Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Mark Ermler, Algis Zhuraitis died, there was no one in the theater with the talent of these people. And, thank God, the theater is now led by a great musician.
About youth
Each new generation will be different, and there is nothing terrible about that. I can’t say that they have “empty eyes,” they just have different values and different interests. I’m not trying to fight them, I’m trying to interest them.
About disappointment
Disappointment is the heaviest color in a person’s life. We often regret the investment we have made in a person. It’s both very sad and very painful to be disappointed, especially if you have invested a lot of strength, love, trust, participation in this person… It’s hard.
About envy
Envy is lying to yourself. When it seems to you that you also deserve what someone else got. Envy has no positive connotation. But sometimes it can motivate you to take some action in relation to yourself – for example, to achieve something.
About regret
Since fate gave me a small number of years of communication with the people closest to me, I regret that I did not communicate with them. I did not talk about anything with my mother, I had no time! What young man at 17-18 years old finds time to talk about something with his mother, much less listen to her. I didn’t ask the nanny about anything, although she was a witness to important historical events.
About fairy tales that have become reality
The Bolshoi Theater was a fairy tale when I was little, and when I said that I would become the main dancer, everyone laughed. But that’s how it became.
About star children
I can’t stand acting children, they have bothered me all my life, and I would never allow my child to become an acting child.
About the last day of life
Nobody knows what the feeling will be on the threshold, probably, you fell asleep and didn’t wake up – this is a gift, because the person had no idea.
About raising children
Being honest with yourself is the most important thing I try to teach my students.
