Nikkei: Apple postpones purchase of chips from Chinese company YMTC
[ad_1]
Apple has suspended a plan to purchase products from one of China’s largest microchip manufacturers, YMTC. According to Nikkeiit happened shortly after the US authorities tightened sanctions against Chinese microchip manufacturers.
Nikkei sources say that Apple has already completed a months-long certification process for NAND flash memory chips that YMTC manufactures. Chips from YMTC are considered more advanced than chips from other Chinese manufacturers. True, they are inferior to the chips of market leaders such as Samsung Electronics and Micron, but they are 20% cheaper. As Nikkei writes, Apple was going to start using them in its gadgets as early as this year – first in iPhones sold in the Chinese market, and then in gadgets for other markets.
However, in early October, the US government banned American companies to sell semiconductors made using American technology to Chinese companies without obtaining export licenses. These restrictions will hit, among other things, YMTC – it will be more difficult for the company to develop microchips of the latest generations.
“Apple may still seek to use YMTC chips in the local market for China. But in the current environment, it is extremely unlikely that YMTC will be able to supply the kind of NAND chips that Apple needs in a couple of years, ”said Brent Fredberg, director of investment at Brandes Investment Partners.
