New Russian nuclear icebreaker named “Stalingrad”

The new Russian nuclear icebreaker has been given the name “Stalingrad”. This was announced by the Governor of the Volgograd region Andrey Bocharov.

The head of the region spoke about the initiative at the plenum of the Volgograd Regional Veterans Council. At the same meeting, he also brought an appeal to the President of Russia with a proposal to name the icebreakers of Project 22220 in honor of Stalingrad. According to Bocharov, the goal was to preserve the historical memory of the feat of the city’s defenders during the Second World War and to provide military-patriotic education to young people. On the document, Vladimir Putin wrote “I agree” and signed it. This appeal was transferred to the Volgograd Regional Veterans Council for storage.

Project 22220 nuclear icebreakers are recognized as the most powerful and largest in the world. Each vessel is equipped with two RITM-200 reactors with a total capacity of 60 megawatts. The icebreaker measures 173 meters in length and 34 meters in width. Such ice-class vessels are capable of breaking through ice up to three meters thick.

Project 22220 nuclear icebreakers are designed to provide year-round navigation in the western part of the Arctic. By this time, three ships have already been built and accepted into the Russian fleet – “Arktika”, “Ural” and “Sibir”, two more icebreakers are currently being built at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg.
