New documentary series about Harry and Meghan caused a furore: racism surfaced

Not a day without scandal – this formula may be the slogan of the British royal family. The rebellious couple of the Dukes of Sussex is again in the spotlight – the first part of the documentary series about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is being released. In particular, the film contains accusations against members of the royal family of racist inclinations.

Prince Harry says the royal family did not understand that his future wife needed protection from racist attacks. The couple also stated in a Netflix docu-series that the media is “destroying us.”

According to The Guardian, the Duke of Sussex said the royals were asking why Meghan should be “protected” when they questioned headlines about Markle after news of their relationship broke in 2016.

Speaking on the six-part documentary series Harry & Meghan, Prince Harry said: “It was almost like a rite of passage and some family members were like, ‘My wife had to go through this, so why should your girlfriend be treated differently? Why should you receive special treatment? Why should she be protected? I said, “The difference here is the racial element.”

In the opening scenes of the series, Harry is shown at Heathrow Airport in footage he himself filmed in March 2020 as he prepared to leave the UK for the last time as a senior member of the royal family. Explaining why the couple made the documentary, the British king’s son said: “It’s about duty and service and I feel that as part of this family, I have an obligation to expose this exploitation and bribery that is happening in our media.”

Meghan, meanwhile, is seen separately filming herself in Vancouver with a towel over her head, saying, “Unfortunately, we who stand up for something are being destroyed by them.”

The series began with a written statement that all interviews were completed in August 2022, a month before the death of Queen Elizabeth II. It added: “Members of the royal family declined to comment on the content of this episode.”

Images of newspaper headlines flashed on the screen, including: “Girl Harry (almost) straight out of Compton.” Meghan said: “First of all, I’m not from Compton, I’ve never lived in Compton, so that’s actually not true. But why do you need to dig into Compton?”

Prince Harry says in the film: “Eight days after the relationship went public, I issued a statement pointing out the racist undertones in articles and headlines written by the British press, as well as the outright racism in these articles on social networks.” .

Speaking about the press coverage, Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, said that the paparazzi were photographing the underprivileged areas of Los Angeles. “They took pictures of different parts of, say, Skid Row and said that I lived there and where she came from,” she said in the documentary.

“It was terrible,” Megan herself admits. “But I kept holding the line.”

Speaking, Harry said: “My son, my daughter, my mixed-race kids and I’m really proud of it. When my children grow up and look back at this moment, turn to me and ask: “What were you doing at this moment?” I want to be able to give them an answer. I think it’s such a responsibility as human beings that if you bring a little person into this world, you should do everything you can to make the world a better place for him. But equally important for the two of us is to make sure we don’t repeat the same mistakes that our parents may have made.”

King Charles III, Queen Consort Camilla, and the Prince and Princess of Wales are not expected to watch the series, but royal aides will be closely monitoring the film’s release and considering whether and how to react to it.
