A few months after suffering from coronavirus, a 28-year-old artist named Annie noticedthat no longer distinguishes father from uncle. Their faces became the same for her.
It is known that covid can cause impaired memory, speech, attention, it deprives the sick of smell and taste. However, the case of prosopagnosia (“facial blindness”) as a consequence of the disease was recorded for the first time.
“My father’s voice came from the face of a stranger,” Annie explained to the researchers.
The girl also complained about navigation problems. She has difficulty navigating the local supermarket, looking for a car in the parking lot for a long time, or driving in the wrong direction on a well-known route.
Neuropsychologists at Dartmouth College from the USA Marie-Louise Kieseler and Brad Duchen conducted a series of tests with Annie. They confirmed that her facial recognition difficulties were due to specific post-coronavirus memory issues.
They pointed to a combination of prosopagnosia and navigational deficits that indicated brain damage.
“This is likely due to the fact that both abilities depend on neighboring brain regions in the temporal lobe,” the experts noted.
